Meet Margaret & Calvin

Born and raised in Folsom, Louisiana, my love for horses started when I was eight years old, when I met my soon to be life-long best friend, Calvin, and fell in love. He was just a yearling, and unfortunately was destined to be sent to the kill pen in a few months. His owner was willing to give him to me, but my parents had different ideas. They wanted me to earn it. Being the daughter of a potter, I spent the next few months selling homemade soaps and candles at art shows with my dad until I saved up the $200 needed for him. The rest was history, and now over 22 years later Calvin and I are still best friends, starting our first barrel racing lesions that same year, and what started as a childhood love for horses quickly became something that would shape nearly every part of my life.

As I got older, horses became much more than a hobby. I spent my early years taking lessons and working around barns, learning that some of the most valuable horsemanship happens outside of the saddle. By my teens, I was gaining hands-on experience caring for horses, grooming, cleaning stalls, tacking, riding, and taking on greater responsibilities around the barn.

That experience eventually took me into many different corners of the horse world. I've worked with polo horses and hunter/jumpers, prepared Thoroughbreds for sales, traveled as a show groom, managed barns and cared for large groups of horses. I've also spent years working with broodmares and foals, from breeding and foal watch to neonatal care and handling young horses, and foaling out over 200 babies over 12 years. Those experiences gave me the opportunity to work with horses of different ages, backgrounds, disciplines and temperaments, and each one taught me something new.

Along the way, I continued looking for opportunities to better understand the horse as a whole. I apprenticed in natural hoof care, became an Equissage Certified Equine Massage Therapist, and later became a Certified Saddle Fit Technician through SaddleFit-4-Life. My professional work has taken me throughout the southern and midwestern United States, as well as into the northern U.S. and Canada, working directly with horses and their owners in their own barns.

All of those experiences eventually came together in Equinox Equine. I wanted to build something that reflected the way I've always approached horses: practically, individually, and with a willingness to keep learning. Today, I bring that experience into every horse I work with, whether I'm providing massage therapy, BEMER therapy, clipping, or helping an owner with leather work and repairs. More than anything, my years with horses have taught me that no two horses are the same. What works for one may not be right for another, and good horsemanship starts with paying attention to the horse in front of you. That's the approach I bring to Equinox, taking the time to understand each horse, their needs, and the people who care for them.

For me, Equinox is about more than providing a service. I'm thankful to God for the horses, people, and opportunities that have allowed me to turn something I've loved since childhood into work that I genuinely care about. After all these years, some of my favorite days are still the simple ones: being in the barn, working with horses, learning from them, and helping their owners care for them.

And more than 20 years later, Calvin is still right here with me, only now, I get the joy of watching my daughter ride the same horse who started it all, passing the reins onto her knowing she's in good hoofs with my best friend.
